Six Valley Municipalities To Do Mid-Decade Census
Peoria will take part in a mid-decade census this year. Five other municipalities in the Valley are also participating in the special count.
Goodyear, Queen Creek, Buckeye, Chandler, Gilbert and Peoria are all doing the special mid-decade census. The cities and towns have to pay for the census costs themselves. It will cost Peoria around $3 million. Deputy City Manager Susan Daluddung said with a higher population count the city will get more in state revenue.
“Our income tax, our sales tax, the gas tax. They are all calculated as a portion of all incorporated cities and towns relative to its population." She said. "So if we can increase our population, we can get a larger relative share.”
She expects that share to be about $9 million over the next five years. Peoria hasn’t set a date for the census yet, but Daluddung expects it will be in the fall.
