3 More Administrators Leave Arizona State Hospital
Three more Arizona State Hospital employees left their jobs last week. This is the second group of top administrators who are no longer at the agency following investigations into sexual misconduct at the hospital.
The Arizona Department of Health Services confirmed the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer Lauren Bonner, Chief Nursing Officer Noreen Vanca and Chief Quality Officer Jennifer Alewelt are no longer employed. The department wouldn’t confirm if the employees were terminated or left on their own.
Last week, the Gov. Ducey chose retired Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Ruth McGregor to lead the special investigation into the alleged physical and sexual misconduct at the hospital.
The health department said in a statement, "Under new leadership overseeing the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Arizona State Hospital, we are taking action to ensure hospital operations are upheld to the highest standard. We will not tolerate anything less than a safe and therapeutic environment for our patients."
At least six top administrators have left the department since the allegations surfaced earlier this year. Health Department Interim Director Cory Nelson, Hospital CEO Donna Noreiga and Attorney Jeff Bloomberg left the department within the last month.
