The Central High School gym was filled to capacity at about 1,000 people.

Senator Bernie Sanders spoke to a crowd of about 1,000 people in Phoenix Sunday at the Central High School gym, encouraging them to get out the vote for Hillary Clinton.

His stump speech touched on many Clinton campaign talking points, like comprehensive immigration reform and equal pay for women. Sanders also criticized Donald Trump for his divisive comments about Muslims and Mexican immigrants and took aim at Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

"We need criminal justice reform all over this country and it may as well start with Mr. Arpaio," he said.

The Senator, who had challenged Clinton for the party’s nomination, also recounted his last visit to the Phoenix area. He spoke of conversations he had with Latino children who expressed fears of coming home from school to find their parents deported.

"Clinton believes the time is overdue to move to comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship," Sanders said.

Several protesters did gather outside the rally, including opponents of the Dakota Access Pipeline project.
