The National Park Service is reviewing a proposal to raise entrance fees at three popular Flagstaff-area monuments. Fees at Wupatki, Sunset Crater Volcano and Walnut Canyon could go up early next year.

The park service is considering two options. One would double entrance fees at Wupatki and Sunset for individuals from $5 to $10 per individual while the Walnut Canyon charge would go up from $5 to $8 per individual.

The other proposal would charge a flat $20 per-vehicle fee for all three monuments.

“The fees haven’t changed since 1997, so that’s 17 years," said Flagstaff-area monuments Superintendent Kayci Cook Collins. "We’re looking at using those fee funds which are retained in the monuments. By the way, 100 percent of the fees stay here to do important visitor-related projects.”

Those projects include improving monument facilities and preserving archaeological sites.

The park service is accepting public comment on the proposals through Feb. 8.
