Q&AZ: How Long Will A New Arizona Travel ID Be Valid?
Arizona residents will need to get a new form of state identification if they want to get through TSA checkpoints in 2020.
A listener used our Q&AZ submission form to find out how often the new state IDs will have to be renewed.
In October of 2020, the TSA will start enforcing new Real ID regulations that require a substantial amount of identification.
Arizona Motor Vehicle Division spokesman Doug Nick says the state is recommending residents get a new Arizona travel ID as soon as possible.
“Under federal law, the travel ID is good for eight years," Nick said, "and you can renew it after that, and when you do renew, you don’t have to go through the entire process you initially do to get it in the first place.”
Any of the MVD offices around the state can issue a travel ID as well as licensed third-party vendors. You can find hours, locations and necessary ID forms to bring with you on ADOT’s website.
The travel ID is $25 at state offices. Arizona residents can also use a passport for domestic travel after the 2020 deadline.
