Voter participation on the Navajo Nation is up. Unofficial results from last week’s primary elections show a 3 percent increase in registered voter turnout since 2010.

About 52,000 people cast ballots in the tribe’s presidential primaries last week. That’s a 46 percent participation rate among registered Navajo voters.

The Chinle Agency saw the highest voter turnout on the Navajo Nation with 49 percent participation.

Joe Shirley Jr. and Chris Deschene were the top two vote-getters in the tribe’s primaries. The two men will move on to the presidential election in November.
