The population shift in the United States, as more Americans head west or into the “Sun Belt,” has deeply affected older industrial cities like Detroit, Cleveland and St. Louis.

These were some of the nation’s manufacturing stalwarts, and cities like them have been struggling to adapt to the so-called knowledge economy and industries, exacerbating the country’s socioeconomic divide.

Alan Mallach of the Center for Economic Progress writes about those issues and more in his book "The Divided City: Poverty and Prosperity in Urban America." He joined The Show to talk about it.
